The universal symbolism of the well carries multiple meanings such
as psychological, existential and sexual (male and female) ones. Thomas Mann’s novel Joseph and his brothers’ shows multidimensional representation of the well. This symbol is ambivalent, bivalent and polyvalent. The well marks the deep destiny of Joseph’s character. It is an initiation stage experience that will come, there are concentrated in it all facets of time, it is consistent and has (un)perishable witness of transition but also of life and death, ascent and descent, dark and light, male and female, inner and outer mindset of the character. All these projections of a single symbol offer a broad vision of combining mechanism and(re)interpretation of the artistic image. |
