Rezumat

The article deals with the development of American drama in the late XIXth and early XXth century. The emphasis is placed on the creative activity of the playwrights who preceded Eugene O’Neill, among them James A. Herne, Clyde Fitch and David Belasko. Their major dramas are discussed and their influence on the development of the US theatrical movement is outlined.
