The decision regarding the consitutional name of the Romanian language, not Moldavian, is an occasion for the author to acknowledge the role of the language in Romania’s history. Romanian is the most eastern neolatin language of Europe and is very similar to Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese. The Romanian language was a key element of the national identity for the ethnic Romanians throughout the last century. This determined many historians and writers to state that the homeland of Romanians was their language. A simple sentence of the poet Nichita Stănescu reflects this: “Patria mea este limba română” (“My homeland is the Romanian language”). |
