The name of the scholar I. G. Sbiera is closely linked to the library activity in the Bucovina area. Since his school days he took care of Aron Pumnul's library and was one of the initiators of the establishment of the Gymnasium Library in Cernăuți, in 1871. In 1871 he became curator of the County Library and from 1875 onwards he continued his work as librarian in University Library in Cernăuți. Our new research in the Archives has brought to light a number of documents relating to the work of the librarian I. G. Sbiera, among which we find the Oath taken before the Emperor Francis Joseph I of Austria. Today, we cannot talk about a history of school libraries, public and university libraries in Bucovina without mentioning I. G. Sbiera. As custodian of the Romanian High School Library in Cernăuți, as custodian and head of the Country Library, then as custodian of the University Library in Cernăuți, Sbiera contributed to the establishment, development and preservation of book collections in the Romanian language in Bucovina in the second half of the 19th century, when a visible policy of restricting the Romanians' national expression persisted. |
