Introduction. Obesity in pregnant women is increasing in prevalence worldwide. Maternal body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 and weight gain in pregnancy ≥ 11 kg has been proven to be a potential predictor for negative labor outcomes. Objective. To determine the impact of overweight and obesity in pregnancy, and the associated maternal and fetal complications Materials and methods. The prospective study was conducted by assessing 150 pregnant women. They were recruited in the study at different gestational ages from the 22+0 w.g., whose pregnancy was monitored until delivery. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 21 software. Results. Most of the women included in the study (88/150 – 62.0±4.2%) were of normal weight before pregnancy, with a mean body mass index (BMI) 24.5±4.1. At the same time, in 38/150 cases, women were overweight, and in 23/150 cases – was established the diagnosis of obesity. During the current pregnancy, participants gained between 1 and 30 kg. Compared to participants with normal BMI before pregnancy, pregnant women with overweight and obesity were diagnosed more frequently with: pregnancy induced-hypertension (37.7% vs 6.7%), gestational diabetes (11.3% vs 7.9%), cardiovascular pathologies (20.8% vs 7.9%) and endocrine conditions (11.3% vs 4.5%). Three cases of severe fetal traumatism, 11 cases of macrosomia, and 12 cases of complicated prematurity were determined. Conclusion. Pathological weight gain in pregnancy (≥ 11 kg) was determined in overweight and obese women included in the study, which led to maternal and fetal perinatal complications. The available evidence on short- and longterm health impact for mother and child favors actions directed at preventing obesity in women of reproductive ages. |
