Rezumat

Introduction: After introducing the measles vaccination, measles cases have become quite exceptional. Objectives: To study particularities of measles laryngitis in the context of an epidemic of measles which affected children aged 3-36 months. Material and methods: During 2005-2006 period, in Bihor County burst an epidemic of measles, with 449 hospitalized cases. Of these, there were 15 cases of measles acute laryngitis in children aged 3-36 months. Diagnosis was made on both clinical criteria and by determining measles IgM by ELISA method. To assess the severity of cases it was used a adapted Taussig score. Results: Measles virus (VR) determined acute laryngitis especially in children aged 13-24 months. Laryngitis measles occurred mainly in children from rural areas. During measles epidemic season, in patients having the poorest socio-economic and cultural status, the most important determinant of laryngitis was the measles virus, which was responsible for 31.8% of severe forms of laryngitis and contributed to prolonged hospitalization. Conclusions: Although measles outbreaks rarely occur nowadays, they are redoubtable, especially by inducing severe laryngitis, mainly in infants and toddlers.
