In the evolution of modern history, the idea about the protective dimension of French spirituality compared with Romanian spirituality has become undeniable. The francophone culture influx in the 21th century Romanian space encouraged the native intellectual forces, which in the end led to the inclusion of Romanian culture and literature in the European network of values. The French-Romanian relationship in the 21st century is of an unprecedented richness and diversity. Nowadays, the mixture between the two cultures is expressed in so many new ways, the French pattern resolutely maintaining its leading role in linguistics, literature, education, journalism, politics, etc. All these affinities enjoyed a complex interdisciplinary approach within the conference Echoes of the French cultural pattern in a European and universal context, which made this volume possible because it represents a collection of a large number of papers presented on the occasion of this conference. Based upon these scientific papers, the volume developed subsequently thanks to other new contributions that directly or indirectly were a fair reflection of the impact created by the leading patterns. This volume, shaped gradually by researchers from different geographical and cultural areas, represents a well-designed project, aiming to disclose the leading patterns of the European common heritage like an active source that animated the energies of other national cultures, thus giving them the chance of confronting with the mirrors of otherness. For the sake of an internal coherence, this volume has been structured according to the following thematic areas: Interdisciplinary approaches, Arts & representations, cultural Studies, Literature & culture, within which the authors give priority to the impact of the French cultural pattern over other European languages and literatures, consisting in gaining some different and complex experience. The flexibility of the thematic area has generated other scientific approaches meant to develop the generous cultural and literary resources. We mention, at this point, that every author takes the responsibility for the scientific accuracy and objectivity of his/her paper. In order to create a space for dialogue, this volume gathers papers signed by researchers working not only in the academic and research centres from the Republic of Moldova (Alecu Russo State University of Balti, The Institute of Philology of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova), but also in the Romanian research and academic centres (The Department of Romanian Language for International Students, the Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences, within the Faculty of Letters, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi; The Centre of Multilinguistic and Intercultural Studies, the Faculty of Letters, Spiru Haret University of Bucharest) and in Canada (Fernand-Dumont Chair, the National Institute for Scientific Research, Montréal). They were joined by independent researchers, and journalists interested in this issue. We can only express our deepest gratitude to the authors of these scientific studies for their professional involvement and academic competence in making this volume. The articles gathered in the Interdisciplinary approaches section, investigate different aspects of the relation between literary science and philosophy, history, sociolinguistics and other similar disciplines. According to the principle of interdisciplinarity, the papers cover a wide range of authors, themes and analytic methodology, stressing the necessity of a dialogue between European languages and literatures. Very interesting are the dissociations of the concept of problematology understood as a philosophical approach, based upon a radical questioning, from an interdisciplinary perspective. Within this interdisciplinary equation, problematology is based on the idea of creating a global theory of language based on the distinction questionanswer. The concept of problematology, as radical questioning, was introduced in contemporary philosophical discourse by Michel Meyer, a French-speaking Belgian philosopher. Topical subjects from the field of arts and imagology are presented in the Arts & representations section. Nowadays, that the human body has become part of the history of mankind, representing the mediator between the self and the world, the new concepts of bodiliness and the conscience of our own bodiliness clearly express the connection to the present time. These concepts call the researchers’ attention to the body perception and image. Moreover, the conscience of self bodiliness is a topic that implies an original approach of the female body in art, conceived in a synthetic and diachronic view, from Picasso to Yves Klein. The cultural Studies section contains articles dealing with specific aspects of multicultural society, such is: the immigrant’s status, frequently submitted to a real institutional and media war, the process of defining the national conscience, noticing, for instance, the reduction of the immigrants’ rights, more and more serious as time passes (Why the immigrant has become the number one public enemy). This fact results, among many other consequences, in a new microcosm where the immigrants mix their culture and customs with the natives’ traditions, but especially with the traditions of the other groups of immigrants (From the Empire Windrush to Black England. Towards a multicultural society). The Literature & culture section deals with various cultural and literary aspects, and highlights the important influence of the French culture. The literary phenomenon has been presented from various points of view: poetic, archetypal, psychoanalytic, sociological, etc. The investigations, according to the synchronic and diachronic principle, explore the individuality, otherness and modernity of the RomanianFrench literary convergences. The influence of the French Enlightenment movement over the South-East Europe is presented, among others, in an eloquent synthetic manner, together with the implicit consequences deriving from such an impact. The articles dealing with the great masters’ “lessons” (Balzac, Proust, Gide) enjoy a growing special interest. The authors of these articles approach the French cultural pattern, discussing some important literary personalities which played an essential part in promoting both Romanian and French cultures, like: Paul Goma, Panait Istrati, or Matei Vişniec, who prove in the most suggestive way how the intercultural dialogue can be outlined, beyond theories. Both sides of this intercultural dialogue enjoy the implicit benefits. The studies, some analytic, other synthetic, but all of high academic standards, follow the principle of originality and scientific responsibility. The authors come from the ranks of academic personnel, researchers and PhD candidates, and they are all keen on investigating the phenomenon of culture and communication in the European uniting space. We hope that this volume, as a whole, will be more than just a dialogue between researchers from different scientific fields, it will promote harmonious contacts between different cultures and languages which are so necessary nowadays within contemporary European spirituality.
