Rezumat

There is an ongoing tension in international law between the establishment of a right of secession of minority groups within sovereign states and the goal of maintaining international order and the status quo. Recognition of a general right of secession under international law has historically been disfavored by the international community. In addition, there is little evidence under customary international law to support the existence of a secession right.
