Background. Unstable Angina (UA) is a form of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and is a major cause of mortality due to the increased prevalence of many risk factors for coronary heart disease, such as diabetes mellitus (DM), which aggravates the underlying mechanisms of atherosclerosis. Objective of the study. Study of the features of clinical evolution, diagnosis and treatment of patients with UA and type 2 DM. Material and Methods. This study was performed on a group of 60 patients, of which 30 with and 30 without DM, with a mean age of 68.9 years (±20years). All of them were hospitalized in Holy Trinity Municipal Hospital. The symptoms, complications, laboratory and instrumental diagnosis, drug and interventional treatment were compared. Results. Patients with UA and DM most frequently presented the lower intensity of angina pain (41.6%) which occurs more often both at low physical effort (23.3%) and at rest (13.3%). The symptoms associated with angina pain were: dyspnea (35%) and fatigue (46.6%). Coronary angiography showed signs of bivascular lesions (8.3%) and trivascular lesions (26.6%). Common complications were heart failure (50%) and atrial fibrillation (26.7%). The interventional treatment performed was: percutaneous coronary intervention (25%) and coronary bypass (15%). Conclusion. Patients with unstable angina and diabetes mellitus are characterized by lower intensity of angina pain, the more frequent presence of symptoms associated with angina pectoris and the development of complications such as heart failure and atrial fibrillation. |
