Rezumat

Plant genetic resources (PGR) play an important role in sustainability, resilience and adaptability to different environment conditions. While the loss of PGR is attested day-by-day due to various threats, such as climate change, it is important to collect and conserve this diversity. The germplasm exploration and collection have resulted in accumulation of enormous genetic diversity of crop plants. Therefore, concerted efforts need to be made for its characterization, evaluation and identification of trait specific accessions. Characterization and evaluation is the key to assess the potential and actual value of germplasm. The good characterization and evaluation of PGR can provide breeders with valuable information on the genetic resources for their possible use in breeding programmes.
