Rezumat

Because of historical circumstances, Bessarabia has always had outstanding scholars in the field of the social science that deals with the history, culture, literature and languages of the Slavic peoples. Until recently it was one of the conditions of our existence under two cultures that had influenced each other – the Latin and the Slavic cultures. The most wellknown scientists in this domain are Stefan Ciobanu, who studied Slavistics at Kiev, and Boris Baidan, who did his PhD in Slavistics in Cluj. But there is another prominent figure in this field about whom almost everybody has forgotten, and namely Emil Gane, who did his PhD in Prague, Czechoslovakia. There is an explanation for this “forgetfulness”. The years spent in the Soviet gulag, on the island of Sakhalin, did not leave him any chance to fully realize himself even after repatriation to Romania. Basically, his destiny is a remarkable one, like the fate of thousands of Moldavians, who undergone the hardships of the history which seem to follow them even after their death.
