In the 1920s the power of the Soviet Union has set itself the task of complete destruction of any opposition, the anarchists were considered by the authorities as potentially dangerous “elements” that could lead the country’s labor movement. The authorities was worried about the growing influence of anarchists on young people (including students).During this period of time anarchists were accused of terrorism, banditry and support of a counter-revolution. The world followers of left-wing radicalism and the large trade union syndicates (such like “Faud”, “Fora” and “IWW”) defended actively anarchists repressed in the USSR, in the 1922 -1926swere founded international committees to help anarchists in the USSR, besides the anarchist “Black Cross” carried out its activity, as well as mass protests against the persecution of anarchists in the USSR were held in the USA, France and Germany. In Western Europe and in the USA were printed publications describing the terror carried out by Soviet authorities against anarchists, the funds were collected by so called “Relief Funds” to support repressed anarchists and the opposition movement. In the 1922–1923s the international pressure on the Kremlin led to a release of a number of anarchist leaders and their deportation to Germany. The anarchist movement began to revive in the USSR, it started getting assistance from other western like-minded persons, however systematic mass arrests of anarchists and their sympathizers were carried out in the Soviet Union since 1924 (over 1 thousand anarchists were arrested during these years). Repressive machine created through provocations, intimidation and state terror managed to completely demolition of the anarchist movement in the USSR which ceased to exist by the end of the 1920s. |
