Henry James’s literary and critical essays explain his concerns about the future of the novel form and his reflections on its status. This paper highlights the important ideas introduced by Henry James in the theoretical part of his work as the roles and the images of the novelist and the qualitative and quantitative of evaluation of the modern readership. The tremendous success and depth of James’s work occur due to his exceptional background and arduous labour. Moreover, he was a direct and active participant in both English and American cultural, social and literary life. Obviously, James was interested in capturing the reader’s attention to the maximum, and attempted to find his personal secret of the novel, which would bring him long-lasting success and acknowledgement. The short story The Figure in the Carpet embodies James’s concerns discussed in his theory. It also emphasizes two things: firstly, that every literary text is a secret; and secondly, that the critics are failing to comprehend the writers’ purpose. |
