This work reflects results of the study regarding role of social responsibility and ethics in business. To make it clear, we need to answer simple questions. What is Social responsibility? Social responsibility is an ethical theory, in which individuals are accountable for fulfilling their civic duty; the actions of an individual must benefit the whole of society. In this way, there must be a balance between economic growth and the welfare of society and the environment. What is Business ethics? Business ethics is a form of applied ethics or professional ethics that examines ethical principles and moral or ethical problems that arise in a business environment. and is relevant to the conduct of individuals and entire organizations. It means that social responsibility and business ethics are closly connected. According to Alex Edmans, The Professor of Finance of London Business School, any business is a small community that can change the world around us. So Investing in companies that are socially responsible at least of their workers pay off gives a higher return. He also say : “If you treat your customers and employees in the best way and preserve the environment for future generations, profit will come naturally”. As the Voltaire said “With great power comes great responsibility” Then a question arises. Why do businesses exist? To serve the purpose? Or to earn the profit? The conventional view is exclusive to earn profit. In fact profit is a by-product, it is not the end goal. Instead businesses exist to serve purpose. But how does the social responsibility works in this case? Take as an example George Mercher, the presedent of Pharmaceutical company who did not think how to make more money selling drugs. He thought how he could use science to save human lives In March the 14th 1942 George Mercher fers starts the commercial use of penecillin, saving life to 33 yearsold Ann Miller, who was dying of streptacocal disease. She lived untill 90 years and gave birth to three sons. Then he shared the secrets of how to make penicillin with his competitors. This helped to save thousands of lives in World War two. He did it because truly believed “Medicine is for people it is not for the profits”. This is his Social responsibility Summarizing, we must say that social responsibility like ethics can not be quantified, but it can be measured. Social responsibility and ethics has a grate role in modern society and gives competitive advantage to any kind of business. We need to think long-term values, not short-term numbers.
