In the autumn of 2015, when digging a pit for silage storage on the territory of Mălcăuţi village (com. Dărcăuţi, Soroca district), a burial tomb dating from Roman times was uncovered and partially destroyed. The archaeological discovery was made at the south-west of the locality, on a small plateau formed by the confluence of two streams, one of which is a left tributary of the Căinari river. The skeleton, oriented north-south, belonged to a female of 18-20 years and was laid on his back with his hands along the body, the legs being stretched out and close. As inventory, the tomb contained a Roman truncated cup, wheel-made of fine brick-red paste and covered with red oil varnish, found at the left of the legs; a fragmentary mug having a spheroid flattened body, a wide cylindrical neck and handle missing, executed on the wheel of fine gray pulp, two nearly spheroid smokers hand-made of coarse paste, with perforations on the body, a clay bitruncated spindle and a white metal glass with a sign / tamga type / on the relief, broken from antiquity, the place of the discovery unspecified; a bronze temple link, found near the skull; numerous beads of colored glass paste or limestone of various types, located in the area of shanks and feet, and a few atypical shards of a gray vessel, wheel-made of paste containing fine sand, recovered from the soil thrown from the silage pit. In the dug soil some human bones were found, which, according to the anthropological definitions, belong to another skeleton, attributed to a man at the age of more than 20 years at the time of death (young adultus or maturus). Based on the funeral rites and customs of wearing and of inventory typology, the funerary complex of Mălcăuţi belongs to the Sarmatian culture and chronologically to the last part of the I-st century AD - First half of the next century. |
