The Milești II archaeological site, discovered in the spring of 2017 on the occasion of prospecting by the specialists of National Agency for Archaeology of the Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline route, represents an open settlement with traces of Eneolithic (Precucuteni culture) and early migration periods (Sântana de Mureș-Cernyakhov culture). The site is located at 2.9 km to NW of the western edge of the Milești village, on the right slope of a stream, a tributary of the Brătuleanca river. On September 19, 2017, archaeological preventive excavations were started on the site of Milești II on the area affected by the Ungheni-Chișinău gas pipeline. Since the gas pipeline will intersect the southern area of the archaeological site, which is mostly planted with plums and the land has not yet been expropriated, only two small sections disposed along the gas pipeline could be excavated: one (section, with the dimensions of 3×6 m) in the south-eastern edge of the site, and the second (section II, with the dimensions of 3×15 m) to the west of the orchard. As a result of excavation, in the section II, at the base of the slope, between the orchard and a country road, there was found a consistent layer of culture (thickness of over 1 m), consisting of a rich ceramic material, a few pieces of inventory (a bronze fibula, an iron knife, a spindle whorl of burnt clay, a whetstone etc.), and pieces of burnt clay from a surface construction, belonging to the Chernyakhov settlement. In the section II on the upper part of the slope, a thin archaeological layer with few ceramic fragments and burned clay was identified, and at its base – there were two small, crossed pits, inside one (pit 1) - there being some Chernyakhov type grey vessel fragments made on wheel. Among the archaeological materials obtained from the surface of the site, we would like to notice a bronze fibula, a fragment of a green glass cup, decorated with a ribbed tape under the edge, an iron sewing needle and a tile stone, which are attributed to the horizon of the 4th century BC. |
