Rezumat | |||||
Milești III is another archaeological object identified near the village of Milești (Nisporeni district, Republic of Moldova) in the spring of 2017, with the occasion of prospecting of the Ungheni-Chișinău gas pipeline route. The site is situated outside the village, about 0.5 km NNW from the edge of the locality, and 0.14 km E from the L390 local road, on the left side of an approximately N-S-orientated valley, on which an unnamed stream flows. The archaeological site contains traces of habitation from the late Hallstatt (7-6th centuries BC) and the Gothic migration period (4th century AD), the vestiges being spread over an area of about 250×600 m. The surface of the site is partly grassland or arable land, and partly is occupied by a vineyard, acacia and fruit trees. In the autumn of the last year, preventive archaeological excavations were carried out within the perimeter of the Milești III site, aiming at the archaeological research of the sectors, affected by the Ungheni-Chișinău gas pipeline. Four sections 3 m wide and 9-20 m long were excavated in the central-western area of the settlement, along the route of the gas pipeline. A sector in the western area of the site, now covered by a vineyard, was investigated in the spring of 2018. As a result of the excavations, an area of about 180 square meters was uncovered, and there have been discovered 24 pits of different sizes and functions, a stone platform, representing the base of a fireplace, remains of a dwelling and a large amount of archaeological materials, belonging to two cultural-chronological horizons. The vast majority of the complexes are attributed to a Sântana de Mureș-Chernyakhov type settlement of the 4th century AD. The same settlement at the beginning of the Migration period also includes most of the recovered materials - wheel and hand-made ceramics, fragments of glass vessels, various clothing accessories, ornaments or toiletries, tools, household utensils and other pieces, made of bronze, iron, glass, stone and bone. Several pits of various function functionality, a trilobate arrowhead and a fragment of hand-made ceramics are attributed to a layer, dated back to the late Hallstatt (7-6th century BC) which, however, is difficult to determine from the cultural and chronological point of view. |
