THEMYS is a new simultaneous TG-DSC/DTA modular platform with a temperature range 25 – 1750°C. The thermogravimetric measurements can be performed using one of the three optional hang-down balance models: high sensitivity (designed for very small variations), high capacity (+/- 3g of mass variation), high versatility (auto-tare system, which virtually eliminates the manual equilibration of the balance between tests). Additionally, a high pressure version operating up to 1200 C and 150 bar is available. Several applications will be shown as examples, including standardized tests (CuSO4.5H2O, CaC2O4 at 50 bar), gas sorption, high temperature corrosion, and coal pyrolysis at 5 and 10 bar. The gas flow management system and the atmosphere control will be discussed. A special attention will be paid to the three available gas options: PureGas, GasBlend and MultiGasBlend which allow to sequentially changing the gas types, flowrates, or blend ratios during the experiment or sample pre-treatment. THEMYS is designed for Evolved Gas Analysis by coupling to the main gas analysis techniques: mass spectrometry, FTIR spectrometry, gas chromatography, and combinations of these. The furnace allows for in-situ analyses with two 4-port parts placed at its top and bottom. Up to 8 extra sensors can be connected (some of the ports may already be occupied with options like vacuum, gas flow or standard EGA coupling). Depending on the selected modules, the mode of operation, the temperature and pressure range, THEMYS can be used for characterization of organic or inorganic materials (polymers, composites, oils, coal, ceramics, cements, metals, and nanomaterials): composition, thermal and corrosion resistance, the efficiency of the synthesis routes, the regeneration/recycling conditions, and the detection of different phase transitions. The high pressure version is particularly beneficial for the pyrolysis, combustion, and gasification studies of fuels (biomass, coal) or the structure of materials (alloys, ceramic). Another important application is the sorption properties investigation of catalysts or porous materials under low, atmospheric or high pressure. |
