Thermochemical treatment with acid gases is a simple and efficient method to increase the chemical stability of the surface of industrial glasses. The modification of composition and structure of glass surface layers is accompanied by increasing its chemical durability by several times. Additionally, the mechanical strength improves by 10-20 %, thermostability and microhardness by 5-10 %. However, one of the main disadvantages of thermochemical treatment of industrial glassware by acid gases is pollution of the atmosphere with toxic substances. The aim of the undertaken work was to develop ways to reduce the toxicity of the dealkalization process of the surface layers of industrial glassware by acid gases. Industrial glassware of different purposes served as objects of investigation. The experiments were carried out on sheet glass, containers (bottles, jars and flasks) of transparent colorless, green and brown glasses, illuminating glassware made from transparent colorless and milk glasses, laboratory and assorted glassware, ampoules made from transparent colorless medical glass. Sulfur and nitrogen oxides, hydrogen fluoride and chloride, halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons, mixture of these gases and other reagents may be used for thermochemical treatment of glassware. In manufacturing conditions, glass containers (bottles, flasks and jars) were treated with gaseous reagents during the stage of final blowing of glassware, being placed on the cooling tables of glass-forming machines, on the conveyer in the process of transportation of glassware to the annealing furnace or while annealing. The emission of poisonous substances into the atmosphere occurs in the process of storing of gaseous reagents, during the contact of reagents with glass surface, during the thermochemical treatment of hot glassware and after thermochemical treatment of glass surface by gaseous reagents. We determined the following ways to reduce the toxicity of the dealkalization process of surface layers of industrial glassware by acid gases: 1. to replace the toxic acid gases by reagents that are non-toxic at room temperature and decompose in the process of heating forming acid gases; 2. it is advisable to apply halogenated derivatives of hydrocarbons (tetrafluoromethane, difluorodichloromethane, difluorochloromethane and others) for thermochemical treatment of glass surface; 3. to use mixture of gases that most actively dealkalize glass surface; 4. to prevent excessive use of reagent, which deteriorates the quality of the glass surface.
