This review describes the main forms of the esophageal cancer (adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) and their precancerous conditions. Barrett’s esophagus (BE) with dysplasia has an increased carcinogenic risk for esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). Squamous cell dysplasia is considered to be a precancerous condition for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the esophagus. There are specific risk factors for each type of dysplasia. The alteration of the squamous epithelium is promoted by bad habits (alcohol, smoking), substances (caustics, nitrosamines), infection with the human papilloma virus, hereditary predisposition. The occurrence of intestinal metaplasia (PB) and subsequent dysplasia is mainly due to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Timely detection and correction / elimination of risk factors, as well as treatment of GERD, adequate monitoring of patients are the main ways of preventing primary esophageal cancer |
