After the collapse of USSR, Uzbekistan has remained relatively stronger among Central Asian states. By its geopolitically important territory sharing borders with all Central Asian states and Afghanistan, and its natural resources; it has been one of the major players in the region. Especially, after 11 September 2001 terrorist attack, with the American intervention in the region, Uzbekistan has started to play more vital role in the region and international politics. Islam Karimov was the main actor in foreign policy making of Uzbekistan from his coming to power until his death. This article explores the foreign policy of Uzbekistan under Karimov’s ruling towards United States in the post-Soviet era with reference to important events. Given the Uzbekistan’s special history carrying Soviet legacy and Russia’s current influence over region, relations with Russia are inseparable in analysing Uzbek-American relations. |
