The article is dedicated to analysis of theories of social stratification in terms of the cultural dimension. All three groups of theories, conflictualist, functionalist and economic, came in development to the need to include cultural indicators in determining membership to a certain social class. Moreover, the role of these indicators increased permanently, so that many researchers believe that today the cultural component has the priority in assessing the belonging to a certain class. The social mobility, ascending or descending, takes place depending on the relationship between the values accepted by society and the individual values. The results of sociological research which determines the values that are considered necessary in the Moldovan society for social ascendance and individual values that lead individuals in everyday life are presented.
