Baskground: Intestinal parasitary invasions still represent a public health problem. One of the most frequent is giardiasis - instestinal parasitic infection present worldwide. Its invasion has serios consequences on children public health in devoloping countries, it is the most frequently found intestinal protozoa. Recent studies perfected in Germany and USA show that this parasitic infection is still a threat to the developed countries worldwide. Material and methods: The article presents the investigation results of 516 examined stool samples from people with different pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract. The samples were examined by direct microscopy method and ELISA-Ag assay. Rezults and discussion: Lamblia intestinalis was found in 17 people (3,3 ± 1,6%), using at least one of three methods: 10 cases (1,9 ± 0.3%) by basic microscopy and using the formalin-ether enrichment technique, and 17 people (3,3 ± 1,6%) using the ELISA-Ag technique. 61 people (11.8%±2,0%) were infected by other species of intestinal protozoa. The results confirmed that the ELISA test - Ag is a fast and highly advantageous to determine protozoa Lamblia intestinalis. The method is particularly useful for confirming suspected cases of giardiasis, which were detected as negative by microscopic investigation. Concluzion: However, microscopy is recommended as daily practice, being much cheaper and can also detect other species of intestinal protozoosis. |
