Introduction. Epilepsy is one of the most severe neurological childhood diseases. Every year the number of children diagnosed with epilepsy increases. Therefore detailed knowledge of the development and incidence and prevalence indicators, also of risk factors will contribute to the improvement of health care services provided to the population. Material and methods. For our study we used data from the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova. Information gathered included statistics period (from 2007 to 2011). Results. The highest levels of the epilepsy prevalence were noted in 2011, accounting for 20.1 per 10,000. In the period of five years from 2007 through 2010 the disease prevalence reached the level of 15.4 per 10,000, 14.9 per 10,000, 17.6 per 10,000, and 19.9 per 10,000. In 2008 there was noted a decrease with 3.1% compared to the level registered in 2007. In the next years there was an increase with 18.1% in 2009, 13.0% in 2010 and 1.4% in 2011. Epilepsy incidence indicator reached the level of 3.6 per 10,000 in 2007, 2.8 per 10,000 in 2008, 3.6 per 10,000 in 2009, 4.0 per 10,000 in 2010, and 3.6 per 10,000 in 2011. The highest incidence was observed in 2010, when 301 children were diagnosed with epilepsy, that accounts 4.0 per 10,000 population. Conclusions. The data available on prognosis suggest an increase of epilepsy incidence by 2018 up to 4.4 per 10,000, and the prevalence level by 2018 is estimated to be 27.3 per 10,000 population. |
