À travers le roman Tayaout, fils d’Agaguk, l’écrivain canadien Yves Thériault présente le voyage initiatique «aux pays des glaces éternelles» d’un jeune Inuk afin de trouver la pierre sacrée dont les anciens tiraient des fétiches protecteurs. Le présent article se propose d’analyser les multiples significations qui pourraient être attribuées au voyage dans ce roman. La corruption qui est entraînée par l’invasion de la civilisation blanche transforme le héros éponyme en un rebelle indomptable, aux prises avec une société de consommation à l’intérieur de laquelle le système de valeurs est remis en question, et pour lequel l’identité inuit s’avère même plus importante que la vie de son propre père.

Throughout the novel Tayaout, fils d’Agaguk, the Canadian writer Yves Thériault presents the journey of initiation to “the land of eternal ice” of a young Inuk in order to find the sacred stone from which his ancestors crafted protective fetishes. This article is aimed at analysing the multiple meanings that could be attributed to travel in this novel. Corruption which is driven by the invasion of white civilisation transforms the eponymous hero into an indomitable rebel, struggling in a consumer society in which the value system is doubtful, and for whom the Inuit identity is even more important than the life of his own father.
