Six Characters in Search of an Author is considered Pirandello's masterpiece, the first of the trilogy of “theater in the theater”. The drama of the six characters, who struggle to acquire an art form, represents a major turning point in the history of playwriting and it can be said that with it starts the modern theater. In this “comedy” life modifies the closed structure of the traditional scene and it emphasizes the character's drama. In Pirandello's play, the messages have general and conclusive value. The drama triggered by the impossibility to communicate and by the characters' loneliness takes place under the astonished spectators' gaze, because beyond the theater, they sense man's troubled condition, a drama that everybody of them can experience. |
