Rezumat

The diseases caused by helminths are always a major constraint to productivity in small ruminants in the subtropics. Garlic, Allium sativum L., a member of the Liliacea family, has been widely recognized as a valuable spice and a folk remedy for a variety of bacterial and parasitic diseases. The objective of this study was to test a treatment of ascariasis in small ruminants with the essential oil of garlic. The oil was extracted and subjected to the rough oral treatment targeted animals previously undergone stool examination. The animals that make up the experimental group received the essential oil of Allium sativum L. whereas those in the control group received vitamin B-complex as placebo. Of the 43 samples taken and analyzed, 18 cases were positive by the direct method and 22 cases by the flotation method, an average positivity rate equal to 50,85(± 26,64 and 53,67 ± 22 54 respectively. After 10 days of waiting, after ten days, the last administration of the product, it was found an improvement in the general condition of the animals being treated. To confirm this fact and in order to ensure that the essential oil of Allium sativum acted on roundworms, a new stool examination was performed on the treated animals. It was found a significant decrease in the number of eggs per gram of feces. This study shows that garlic can be used as first-line treatment of Ascariasis in small ruminants. A combination with other plant extracts could increase the effectiveness of the essential oil of garlic.
