The article analyzes the rumors that emerged in Russian society in connection with student unrest in 1861 in St. Petersburg. Based on diaries and memoirs of contemporaries, the content of the main rumors related to the causes of unrest, the situation of arrested students, attitudes toward Emperor Alexander II is reconstructed. The important role of rumors in shaping public opinion during period of crisis is shown. Special attention is paid to the diary of the St. Petersburg gymnasium student V.I. Chemezov, in which the impact of social upheavals and rumors related to them were reflected most fully. The evolution of the diary author's views under the influence of information from rumors is noted. |
