Through the methodological grid of imagology we intend to analyze the testimonies left by foreign travelers and to present based on them a first image of the place where the city of Cahul is today. At the beginning came different scholars, merchants of different nationalities, each with their own purposes, some spreading catholicism, others engaged in business, some of them were just passing through this piece of land, leaving vague data about this place. Referring to historical sources, this territory also had other names, such as: Scheia, Frumoasa and Cahul. Also, the battle of Cahul appears in the works of foreign travelers who visited the southern territory of Bessarabia, such as Gustav Orraeus, Kajetan Chrzanowski, Heinrich von Reimers or Johann Martin Minderer. Each individual traveller, doctor, diplomat or counselor left in their reports some notes important from our point of view. The images that we identify in the testimonies of foreign travelers highlight a positive image of the place where the city of Cahul is located today. The phrases „the battle of Cahul”, „the winner from the Cahul”, have a positive connotation.
