Rezumat

Nicolae Mertz (1890–1947) is among the most talented architects who promoted Romanian modern architecture in Chisinau during the interwar period. After studying at the of the Faculty of Architecture in Saint Petersburg, the architect comes to Chisinau where he works as a freelancer in the private office and mathematics’ teacher at the “Technicum” College. Later, he exercises the position of director of this College. In 1933 Nicolae Mertz became a member of the Corps of Architects from Romania with the status of “recognized architect’. Nicolae Mertz designed several urban villas and individual houses in a modernist spirit. In Romania, this type of architecture, known as Romanian modernism, was launched on a large scale in the 30s–40s of the 20th century. Among the works made by Nicolae Mertz in Chisinau are the following architectural monuments: the former urban villa on Mihail Kogalniceanu street 69; the former urban villa on Mihail Kogalniceanu street 50; the former urban villa on Alexei Shchiusev street 117; the former individual house on Alexei Mateevici street 68; the former individual house on Columna street 154 and others.
