Eugenio Coșeriu, who is one of the greatest Romanian linguists of the 20st century, studied the status of the Romanian language from old times (the 16th and the 17th centuries) and proved that the European scholars have placed Romanian language among the Latin Languages, together with Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese. This demonstration is able to strength de position of Romanian as a Romance language during its whole history. The testimonies of these old European authors contradict some modern opinions pretending that Romanian language was latinized or re-latinized during the 18th and the 19th centuries.
