Adherence to treatment is crucial to attain disease control in patients with chronic diseases, like Hypertension. The main objective of this study was to examine treatment adherence and its association with illness perceptions in people diagnosed with Arterial Hypertension. Data were collected from 106 Portuguese patients followed at a primary healthcare service, who completed two self-report questionnaires: Self-Care Scale for Arterial Hypertension and The Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ-B). The results suggest that participants, on average, report perform self-care behaviours with Hypertension five days a week, especially be careful with her alimentation. The Physical Exercise was the dimension of Self-Care Activities that reveals lower average values, about two days a week on average. Women revealed higher values compared to men in relation to adherence to self-care activities. There were found some associations between self-care activities and illness perceptions. In conclusion, adherence to self-care activities shown to be relatively low, especially in terms of adherence to physical exercise. Patients’ illnessperceptions should be considered when trying to promote their adherence to treatment. |
