The manuscript texts (field material was collected by the author in 2008 – 2012 at Gagauz villages in the south of Moldova) contained in the collections represent a kind of popular catechism. At different stages of its existence in the Gagauz environments the apocryphal literature had different functions: didactic-educational, protective, and religious. Gagauz religious manuscript tradition, which began to spread in the early twentieth century, not only is preserved in the present. |
