Rezumat

The clothes symbolically illustrate the changes in a person’s life related to growth and aging. In this paper, we will trace changes in children’s clothing from birth to adolescence, and the role of clothing as a component of socialization. Until the middle of the 20th century, the appearance of a child was clearly regulated in Ukrainian traditional culture. These rules were due to the practical need for clothing, and had a symbolic role as markers of socialization. The appearance of elements of clothing was clearly associated with family rituals, which have variations in different regions of Ukraine. The need to wear a shirt for a child occurs after mastering the skills of sitting, then the swaddling of the child stops, as a rule; it comes six weeks after birth. This first shirt is prepared for the first rite of ”vyvodyny”. So, before reaching the age of one year, the outfits of both boys and girls did not differ, and consisted primarily of shirts. Sometimes, it could be supplemented with a hat, or a scarf, if it is winter or if the children go outside the house; it could also be fastened it with a piece of cloth or a narrow women’s belt. The appearance of additional items of clothing is primarily related to the involvement of children in work, especially to their grazing. Depending on the wealth of the parents, as well as the diligence of the child, after 6-8 years of age the wardrobe gradually increases, preparing a dowry for the future marriage. Children’s clothing of Ukrainians imitated the clothing of adults, but still often acquired its own special forms, which had different local variations. The change in a child’s clothing from birth to adolescence in Ukrainian traditional culture was determined by the child’s physical development, readiness to perform work and preparation for premarital status.
