Introduction: Post-traumatic epilepsy (PE) is one of the most severe consequences of HT. Post-traumatic seizures occurring in early period of HT are often ignored and not treated specifically in time. Purpose: To evaluate risk factors for post-traumatic epilepsy. Materials and Methods: Our study was performed on a group of 115 patients with PE, 81 were male and 34 - female. Patients’ personal histories were collected in order to evaluate precipitating factors as following: febrile seizures in childhood, enuresis, sleepwalking, family or personal history of inherited epilepsy or psychic disorder, episodic loss of consciousness. The three most important forms were: - concussion in 27,5%, - cerebral contusion in 65,5%, and open cranial cerebral trauma in 7%. Epileptic seizures occurred at different time periods after HT. Thus the PE incidence is about 21,5% during first three months after HT, 32%- during further 3-12 months and 46,5%- after one year following HT. Results: Our study revealed that PE was frequently caused by following factors: cerebral contusion, open cranial cerebral trauma, recurrent HT, loss of consciousness, post-traumatic coma and early posttraumatic seizures. Conclusions: Evaluation of risk factors for PE makes early diagnosis of PE, initiation of early specific treatment and prevention of severe disability caused by epilepsy possible. |
