Background:The evolution of the liver cirrhosis induced by HBV infection, associated with the delta virus is more severe in comparison with the HBV mono-infection, and the existing antiviral therapy has proved to be of little efficiency, the liver transplantation remains the only curative therapy for patients with end-stage liver disease. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence and demographical characteristics of patients on liver transplantation waiting list in period of time during February 2013 – January 2018 in Republic of Moldova. Materials and Methods:Were reviewed medical records of patients with liver cirrhosis induced by delta virus that were on the waiting list for liver transplantation at the Transplant Agency from the Republic of Moldova. Specifically, were analyzed variables that include gender, age and geographical location of each patient. Results: There were 154 patients on waiting list for liver transplantation during February 2013 to January 2018. Liver cirrhosis induced by delta virus was the most common etiology of liver disease, 68 patients (44,15%). Of those on waiting list, 14 patients (20,59%) underwent liver transplant and 21 (31%) died while waiting for transplant. The mean waiting period for transplant was 23,3 3,5 months. According to the demographical indicators the male was 50,6%, the mean age was 489 years. The majority of patients were from the rural location, prevalent from the center regions of the country (37,3%). Conclusion: Liver cirrhosis induced by delta virus is the most common etiology of liver disease among patients from the liver transplantation waiting list in the Republic of Moldova. As transplantation is the main curative therapy for end stage liver diseases, the waiting list mortality is high because of shortage of available donor livers. |
