The article touches upon the phonetical peculiarities of the English and Romanian languages. It concerns comparative analysis of the English monophthongs and diphthongs as well as their correspondents in Romanian. One of the distinctive characteristics of the English monophthongs is the quantitative difference length-shortness which misses in Romanian. The number of English monophthongs (12) is greater than that in Romanian (7), whereas the number of diphthongs is smaller in English (9) in comparison with (28) in Romanian. The English diphthongs have a complicated spelling compared to that of Romanian. |
