Rezumat

The growing popularity of the fantasy genre that is shaping the cultural paradigm of the twenty first century makes us wonder how we all acquired this taste for the supernatural, the moralizing and yet natural landscape. We can trace it back to the medieval mythologies and the Celtic heritage and more recently to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, an explosive cultural phenomenon that shaped the aesthetic background of the late 19th century Victorian England. The Middle Ages and the Gothic had been already glorified and romanticized by Romantic British authors, yet not envisioned solely for aesthetic reasons. The world was facing change and revolution in several aspects of life and simply had to reach the aesthetic world of art and literature. The rebellion masks modern-day criticism and people’s disillusionment with their contemporary world as they try to escape into other realms and have their own imagination create fantasy, beauty and romance.
