The author in his speech underlines the important role of scientists in the Republic of Moldova who opened a new direction of research studies in the field of ecological agriculture almost 30 years ago, well before this topic became a subject of general scientific interest for researches and institutions internationally. The results of this research have been disseminated not only to the farmers in the Republic of Moldova, but also at the international level through publications by the well-known publishers such as Springer, and by participation in scientific conferences in different countries. The author underlines the work of Professor Boincean and his close colleagues in the Republic of Moldova who are aware of the negative impact of tillage-based farming systems on the environment and sustainability of rural communities. They have taken strategic action to establish a long-term experimental research programme involving studies on soil tillage, soil mulch cover, crop rotations, monocultures, different systems of fertilization, and irrigation in crop rotations, multi-factorial experiments on action and interaction between crop rotations, soil tillage, soil cover and soil fertilization but without excessive use of chemicals for pest, disease and weed control. |
