Background. Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves. It is characterized by rapid onset of weakness and often paralysis of the legs, arms, respiratory muscles and face. Objective of the study. To analyze the role of pain syndrome in the evolution of GBS. Material and Methods. The study consisted of a retrospective analysis of 33 patients (12 women, 21 men) diagnosed with GBS, hospitalized during the years 2017-2020 in the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery "Diomid Gherman". Clinical data, Modified ERASMUS GBS Outcome Score (MEGOS) and electromyography were evaluated. Results. Dividing the patients into groups: with the presence of pain - I and without pain - II, it was observed that in 40% of cases (13 patients) the disease started with pain in the lumbar region and lower limbs, other symptoms of onset being weakness and / or numbness in extremities (60%). The period until hospitalization from onset was 19.6 days (SD ± 8) in group I and 10.1 days (SD ± 5) in group II. The MEGOS score at admision was 5.0 ± 2 points (group I) and 4.0 ± 2 (group II), respectively. The electrophysiological examination revealed in both groups in most cases the clinical variant of myelinopathy (64% and 70%, respectively), axonopathy and axonomyelinopathy being rarer forms. Conclusion. Pain as a clinical symptom of onset in GBS imposes diagnostic difficulties, being considered other clinical conditions, which influences early recognition and proper clinical management |
