Literary criticism supports the idea that archetypes determine the shape and the function of literature and that the interpretations of the text derive from myths. The usage of archetypes in literary texts represents a holistic approach, through which the act of writing acquires an universal acceptance. Readers can identify themselves with the characters and the intrigue, from a socio-cultural point of view. Cultural archetypes are materialized through images, symbols or recurrent models that have a certain meaning before they are included in a literary text. In one of the archetypes mentioned by Jung, it can be easily noticed that the fervent desire of the seeker archetype represents the freedom to discover oneself, exploring the world. The strategies of the explorer are the escape from routine, travels, seeking and discovering new things. The initiatory trip has a purpose: to test the explorer in order to gain experience and to let one discover the diversity of the world and of oneself. The initiatory samples help the seeker find one's way towards personal development. Thus, the travel becomes an authentic itinerary which is considered to be, from the explorer point of view, a personal experience and a genuine feeling.
