Hip-cemented arthroplasty using the “Charnley low-friction” method has been utilized in 45 years of clinical application. The best reported statistics demonstrate the indisputable success of this type of arthroplasty. 96,5% of patients consider it successful in pain relief, 74,5% have normal or near normal function and 74,3% have full or nearly full range of hip movements - with a mean follow up of 20 years (10-36 years). Continuous evolution of the design, surgical technique and materials has paid dividends in the long-term success of this method of total hip arthroplasty. The statistics presented in this study, reflect the 15 years of personal experience in this field. Between 2001 and 2008 530 total hip prostheses of the “Charnley-Kerboull type” were implanted by the Orthopedic Department of the Rehabilitation Hospital of Iasi, in 505 patients. Results of the study confirm the medium and long-term success of this type of cemented-hip arthroplasty. |
