In recent years, important research efforts have been devoted to the synthesis and characterization of supramolecular complexes displaying a large variety of topologies. They are liable to multiple applications in the fields of catalysis, host-guest chemistry, electrical and magnetic materials [1]. Particular interest has been focused on metal-assisted self-assembly of helical and box-like homopolynuclear complexes [2]. Some helicates have been obtained from Schiff base ligands derived from p-diaminobiphenyl methane [3]. In the light of our previous work, it seemed possible to improve the interest to such ligands. Indeed, a suitable choice of terminal substituents would increase the number of potentially coordinating sites and open the way to di- (or poly) metallic complexes while preserving the integrity of the bridge responsible for the helical topology. We present now the first structural determination of a bis-dinuclear (Cu-Gd)2 complex that adopts a double– stranded helicate configuration. The magnetic data show that both bis-dinuclear complexes behave as two independent (Cu-Gd) pairs, each presenting a ferromagnetic interaction (J = 4.6 cm-1). |
