Brain-computer interface technology (BCI) is one of the most fast-developing methods of neuroscience, especially in a neurorehabilitation area of biomedicine. At the moment, stroke is one of the most common causes of disability, and as a result, patient disadaptation. This diagnosis is often accompanied by paralysis of the limbs, paresis and other negative outcomes. The cause of similar consequences can be the same, for example, in case of spinal cord injuries. Despite the abundance of simulators and methods of rehabilitation, about 50% of patients after a stroke remain bedridden, or with a paralyzed limb (limbs). In this regard, the methods of neurorehabilitation are constantly evolving and new ways of recovering function of patients with these diagnoses appear. The use of functional electrostimulation (FES) and medical massage of paralyzed limbs is one of the most popular methods of neurorehabilitation in the world, but there is used a forced effect on the paralyzed limb from the outside. A team of employees of the Laboratory for Neurophysiology and Neuro-Computer Interfaces developed a prototype of a neurotechnology that integrates BCI based on a 30-channel electroencephalograph with a single-channel electrostimulator (by «Neurosoft»). EEG indicators are read from the cerebral cortex of the examinee, and program is invited to imagine the movement. As is known, the motion representation causes the activation of sensorimotor regions of the brain cortex and the desynchronization of EEG rhythms, similar to the activation of the same cortical zone when the limb is directly executed by this movement. The developed software automatically detects the desynchronization of the EEG mu-rhythm of the subject, and sends a signal to the electrostimulator, causing flexion / extension of the hand. In this case, the mechanisms of neuroplasticity are used and the physiological resources of the organism are available to patients, which can often be enough to compensate and restore the lost function.
