The relatively unexpected finality of the Cold War was a juncture in the study and understanding of international relations. The dominant assertion prior to 1989 was the complete prescriptive capability of realism through its focus on the role of power, its balance and relative distribution between actors within the system. Yet as soon as the Iron Curtain fell, political scientists scrambled to either justify realism in spite of an unavailability of evidence to back their claims, or refute it on the basis that cultural, domestic and sociological assessments are more lucrative grounds for debates and predictions. It’s undeniable that realism took a beating following an ending of the Cold War that it claimed to be improbable. Yet, improbable does not mean impossible, as in this essay I will argue that realism hasn’t been properly repudiated, and even perhaps emboldened relative to other international theoretical currents, as long as we employ a more systematic approach. Presuming an eloquent understanding of realist theory such as its fundamental assertions, casual mechanics and relationships, we will use a simplified yet robust statement of realism to form an explanatory model of the events leading up the end of the Cold War, as a series of conscious decisions perpetuated by both superpowers. Then, following such explanation, and using predominantly insights developed by Randall L. Schweller and William C. Wohlforth, we will specify the standing that realist theory still possesses following the cold war by reviewing how its mechanics fit the standards of casual importance as well as the falsifiable nature they possess when opposed to competing explanations as both will be facing new potential patterns of evidence. We will conclude by asserting realism’s continual viability. |
