The Union of Bessarabia with Romania, as well as the events leading up to it, were extensively reflected in the international press one hundred years ago. Among the publications which wrote on the topic was the well known American newspaper The New York Times which starting 1914, with the beginning of the First World War, reported on Romania’s political dilemma and worries, whether to join the war on the side of the Central Powers to free Bessarabia or on the side of the Allies in order to free Bukovina and Transylvania. Beginning with the year 1917, on the pages of the North American newspaper could also be found news concerning events of social-political nature occurring in the Prut-Dniester region, topics such as that the anarchy installed after the February Revolution was followed by the constitution of Sfatul Țării and the proclamation of the Moldavian Democratic Republic. The vote for unification on March 27 / April 9, 1918 is announced in the publication dating from April 12 „Bessarabia votes union with Rumania”, while 11 days later the title of the news read „Rumania accepts Bessarabia’s offer”.
