Teza

An important sacral and symbolic role in the wedding rituals and rites of the Ukrainians in the Republic of Moldova is played by bread – хл’іб, grains of rye and wheat – жито, пиши|ница / пи(е)ши(е) |ни(е)ца, water – во|да/ с’ва|та во|да, salt – с’іл’, and sweets: honey – мед / м’ід, sugar – |сахар, |сахар’, |цукор, sweets – ком|фети / кан|ф’ети, цу|корки, бом|бони. There are several types of bread baked for the wedding. Хл’іб was an indispensable attribute of pre-wedding, wedding and post-wedding rituals. Кара|вай / коро|вай was decorated with dough flowers, spikelets, grapes, bird figurines or |шишки, as well as periwinkle, viburnum. Collective baking of кара|вай, accompanied by a lot of rituals, its division at the end of the wedding meal between all the guests for joint consumption, symbolize the union of two kin groups and the consecration of the newly created family by the community. Кара|вай with branches of fruit trees, decorated with small pieces of dough is called гіл’|це / гил˙|це / wел˙|це. Ukrainians of Moldova, in the function of a кара|вай, often use ко|лач’, which performs an important function in many rituals. Some small ко|лач’ики are used at the invitation stage, in rites of gifts, buyout of bouquets, etc. Шишки – wedding ceremonial pastry in the form of buns decorated with flagella, rosettes of dough, or in the form of birds. As well as the purifying and protective functions of holy water, the grain of rye and wheat, various types of bread, salt and sweets are intended semantically and functionally to ensure a happy, prosperous, comfortable life for a young couple. The recorded phenomena demonstrate the high degree of preservation of authentic ritual food, its functions, symbols and names in wedding ceremonies by the Ukrainian population of the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, it proves the influence of the Moldovan wedding traditions on these processes.
