The current situation in Abkhazia epitomizes one of the most intricate issues of the post-Soviet realities – the frozen conflicts. A most defining feature of these conflicts is the incongruity between interpretations of historical events, which results in the inability of the antagonistic parties to find a middle ground for their dialogue. This paper analyses the common history of Abkhazians and Georgians since their incorporation into Tsarist Russia, followed by the Soviet annexation, up to the demise of the USSR and the outbreak of military clashes. Its main scope is to underline the events that have changed the perceptions among the two ethnic groups and to stress how these alterations impacted on the existing paradigms. It ultimately aims at putting emphasis on Russian-Abkhazian relations by reassessing Moscow`s role in shaping the directions and the options of the region. Final conclusions will be drawn by taking into consideration Abkhazia`s accommodation with post-imperial realities and its efforts to national preservation. |
