Rezumat

Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) or stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability in adults around the world. Cognitive and behavioral symptoms can be seen frequently in people who have suffered a stroke. Post-CVA depression is probably the most common emotional disorder and the most important long-term psychosocial consequence of a stroke. Currently, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is used as a new non-invasive therapy for depression, with the application of an electromagnetic coil on the patient’s head, creating a magnetic field. The impulses coming from the coil trigger a multitude of reactions at the stimulation point that can alter the metabolism, subsequently lead to the release of neurotransmitters and a change in gene expression. Waves with a frequency lower that 1Hz lead to a reduction in the excitability of neurons and an inhibition of cortical activity. In contrast, frequencies higher that 5 Hz increase the excitability of neurons and increase cortical activity.
