After the War of Independence, Romania’s modernization happened constantly. The changes were not just about politics, economics or culture. The cities of the Old Kingdom had an evolution towards modernity surprised by foreign travelers, who came here before World War I. Bucharest, Iasi, Craiova, Constanta or Sinaia have peculiarities that make them special in the eyes of these foreigners. Spending leisure time, especially in the urban world, has become a true indicator of changes in mentality and standard of living. Walks in parks, train trips, theater, circus, fair “Estates”, were just a few ways in which people spent their free time.
